Victor and Paulina Espero celebrate Victor's 84th birthday in Kapolei (7/13/17)
They have been married for 60 years.
Senator Will Espero is the son of Victor Dungca Espero and Paulina Calip Espero originally from the Philippines. Senator Espero's father served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years, and the senator was born at the U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka, Japan in 1960. As a Navy dependent, the senator lived in Washington state, California, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Cuba, Japan and Italy while growing up.
In 1982, Will Espero graduated from Seattle University with a degree in Business Management. Later that year, he moved to Hawaii where he has lived the last 36 years.
Prior to serving in the Legislature, he worked in the finance/banking industry, property management, the administration of Frank Fasi, the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii, and with a local home developer. In December 1999, Espero was appointed to the Hawaii House of Representatives by Governor Ben Cayetano.
Senator Espero has served in the legislature for 19 years. He is in his 5th term in the Senate where he serves as the Senate Majority Floor Leader and the chair of the Senate Housing Committee. He is also the
vice-chair of the Transportation and Energy Committee. The senator is also a member of the Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Health Committee, the Education Committee, and the Higher Education Committee.
Other current membership includes the Special Action Team on Affordable Housing, a Veteran's Homeless Working Group, the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (transportation related), Hawaii Reef & Ocean Coalition, and the Medical Marijuana Legislative Oversight Working Group.
The Espero ohana includes Sean who is a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps; Jason who works with the homeless; Jasmine is a fitness specialist & Xavier (6 yrs old). His father Victor is 84 years old and his mother, Paulina is 83.

JAPAN 1961
Victor and Paulina Espero are originally from the Philippines (Bacnotan, La Union and Santiago, Ilocos Sur respectively). When Victor enlisted with the US Navy, he was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan where Senator Espero was born in 1960. This photo from 1961 shows the family relaxing at their home.
As a Navy family, the Esperos lived around the world; California, Washington, Georgia, Virginia, Florida, Cuba, Italy, and Japan. Senator Espero has lived in Hawaii for 28 years.
